North Crown Foundation

Despite the well publicised wealth that has been accumulating in Russia, the concept of giving to charity has not been widely adopted by a people who, after 70 years of socialism, still believe that it is the responsibility of the government to provide help for the less fortunate.

The North Crown Foundation was set up by Irina Kudrina, wife of Russia's finance minister, to help orphaned children living in the remoter regions of Russia. She specifically excludes the big cities such as Moscow and St Petersburg who already benefit from foreign aid. She has instead opted to help those children who live in cities that often no-one outside of Russia has ever heard of.

Not only has Irina been the inspiration and help behind the renovation and improvement of children's lives in some 74 institutions in more than 19 regions of the Russian Federation, but more importantly she is trying to help those teenagers who, after 16 years of care, are simply turned out onto the streets when they reach their 16th birthday. This is an horrendous practice and prospect for any child as they have nowhere to live, no support and no means of obtaining further education or indeed employment. Inevitably, this leads to a life of drink, drugs and crime.

North Crown is the one of the first Russian based charities to be registered in the UK (Charity Reg No 1107088) and to comply with the strict UK regulations governing the administration of charitable status.
